TRANSCRIPT:
I'm Jilly, I'm a pediatric nurse, lactation consultant, a mom of two and I help tired parents get their little ones sleeping well so they can really love this phase of parenthood.
The pickup put down method of sleep training is exactly what it sounds like. The process of sleep training is teaching your baby to sleep independently so teaching them to fall asleep on their own and stay asleep throughout the night. With the pickup put down method of sleep training you are putting your baby down in the crib while they're still awake so they can get into the hang of falling asleep on their own without any help and when and if they cry you're picking them up.
It's pretty simple: put them down until they cry then pick them up once they calm put them down until they cry and then pick them up.
What I found by implementing this method with clients for the last 10 years is there are a lot of nuances and question questions that come up.
Let's cover some questions now.
QUESTION: How long does it take for the pickup put down method to work to get my baby sleeping
through the night?
ANSWER: It takes up anywhere from 5 to 14 nights to get babies sleeping through the night using the pickup put down method. I know that that's quite a wide range, but it really depends on your baby - how old they are, what their personality is like and their energy level.
Of course it depends on your consistency with implementing the steps of this lesson. If you're able to be super consistent and follow the steps then you'll get quicker results um if you backtrack a little bit if you have a few rough nights and you kind of go off the plan then it's going to take longer to get your baby sleeping for the night.
QUESTION: When can parents start the pickup put down method?
ANSWER: You can begin from the age of 5 months old. At this age, babies have the ability to learn to self-settle and pick up put down is a great method for young babies to slowly get them get them
learning the hang of sleeping independently.
QUESTION: Who is pickup put down good for?
ANSWER: Pickup put down is really good for younger babies, 5-9 months old. They tend to respond really well to pick up put down especially if they're not yet pulling to stand. It's also really good for babies who are used to parents he who are heavily involved with helping them fall asleep. So parents that rock, feed their babies to sleep or or co-sleep.
Pick up put down is not ideal for toddlers or really energetic and active babies. Once your baby is pulling to stand or they're walking around the crib, or certainly once you have a toddler or definitely a toddler who isn't in a crib anymore, pick a put down is not ideal.
The reason why is that all of that hands-on involvement with helping your baby learn to sleep well just distracts them from the process.
You can take my interactive quiz to find out the best method for your little one: quiz.tryinteract.com/#/65e6ea740557ea001536fd56
The trick with making this method work is that every night you have to hold your baby a little bit less and have them spend a little bit more time in the crib in order to get the hang of falling asleep on their own.
A lot of parents end up wanting more guidance more advice and step-by-step nightly guides to really implement this method and make it work. If that is you then you can check out my sleep programs for babies: www.babysleepmadesimple.com/sleep-programs/
I offer a range of sleep training methods in my baby sleep program and oneof them is the pick up put down method. We have Night by Night, step-by-step guides that show you exact what to do and exactly what to not do in order for the pickup put down method to work
If you want to give this method a go and you'd really like some customized guidance and personal support from me and my team with implementing this method then definitely click check out our programs and to sign up: www.babysleepmadesimple.com/sleep-programs/
If you have any questions about the pickup put down method or sleep training in general you
can drop them in the comments! Good luck with sleep training, take care.

Been doing all off this from 3 months, he turns 5 months next week and since 4 months of age of he does to scream and shouts, won't go down, won't put himself to sleep, expects me to do it and only take 20 minute naps during the day😂. Tried everything, nothing works. He just continuously makes himself overtired😂.

My youngest is 3 years old. He literally sleeps like a newborn baby.. he wakes up throughout the night on and off.. he has never slept through a whole night.. he thinks he's still needs milk at night so I give him one bottle before he goes to bed.. still wakes up wanting me to bounce them all night.. I am currently 14 weeks pregnant.. and I don't think I can do this anymore.. but at this point I'm lost for words.. and I'm not really sure what to do anymore.. I was told to buy a playpen and let him fall asleep crying.. you know the crying sleep test.. start with 2 minutes you do that twice and you do 5 minutes twice then you do 10 minutes twice and so forth till he's supposed to fall asleep for the night.. but I'm also scared he's going to end up having some kind of panic attack.. because he is used to be in there.. :(

My 10 month old gets a bottle and rocked to sleep. He then wakes up between 2am - 4am and sounds like he's starving. I give him a bottle and he will sleep until about 6am. How do I know if I need to change his bedtime routine or is he just hungry?

Hi Lauren, Thanks so much for reaching out to us! This is a great question. For the majority of babies, if they are doing well on their growth curve and gaining weight appropriately, then they usually do not need a night feed after 10 months. However, every baby is different and we recommend talking to your son's pediatrician to see exactly what he/she recommends for your child. Teaching your LO to fall asleep independently (so eliminating the bottle as a way to fall asleep) is the very best way for your LO to sleep through the whole night! If your LO falls asleep with the bottle, then he may need the bottle to fall back asleep when he wakes up in the middle of the night. We help families teach their LOs this skill in our 21 Days to Peace and Quiet program! We would love to support your family too! Hi Angelica, Thanks so much for reaching out to us! Babies are developmentally ready to learn how to fall asleep independently after they turn 5 months old. At 3 months, your LO is still a little young, but you can certainly work on putting your LO down drowsy, but awake. This can help! Also, we do offer newborn consultations. It can be helpful to chat with a sleep consultant and discuss your LO's routine and schedule to help improve sleep. I’m at my wits end with my 4th… he’s 15 months. I tried getting him to sleep in his own for a couple of weeks. I would sleep by his crib shushing even patting his back and he’d cry and cry and cry. We resorted to putting a mattress on the floor so we can sleep next to him but in his own space. We will slip away but it usually lasts for a couple hours tops. I’m at a loss…

Hi! The 4-month sleep regression can be SO exhausting! I remember feeling like a walking zombie during those days. It is normal for kiddos at this age to still nap between 3-4 hours during the day. The great news is that your LO is also almost 5 months and this is when he can learn how to fall asleep independently. Falling asleep independently without any sleep associations (rocking, feeding, patting) is truly the way to get your son to sleep longer stretches at night. We love to help families step by step to learn how to teach their LOs this skill. This is a great question! The 18-month regression can be a tricky one and super exhausting. The PUPD method can still work for toddlers, however, we do see a more hands-off approach can work a little bit better for kiddos at this age. At 18 months, toddlers can get easily distracted and very stimulated with hands-on approaches. We discuss the different methods and alternatives in our 21 Days to Peace and Quiet program. We would love to support your family step by step to get through this regression and get sleep back on track! This can be a tricky phase for sure! The best thing you can do though is continue to keep giving that practice time as much as possible during the day, like you are doing! Putting toys behind your LO (but within vision) can really help encourage rolling.

My child is 18 months old, he refused to sleep alone from birth to now. He will nap in his crib during the day with no issues, but at night he won’t last in his crib. I hold him until he falls asleep, and lay him in his crib. After the first wakeup, I put him back into his crib, but he jolts awake and fights until I bring him back into our bed, even if we put him back to sleep more than once. (We room share, crib is next to our bed) but we are at our wits’ end, we want to teach him how to sleep on his own before it’s too late.

Hi! Thank you so much for reaching out to us! It is SO exhausting when our LOs need so much support to fall asleep at bedtime. The great news is that your LO is truly the perfect age to learn how to fall asleep independently and sleep through the night. It is definitely much easier to do it now when your LO is still in the crib too! We would love to support your family. I would really recommend our Big Kid program. This will help you navigate the independent sleep training, plus it will give you loads of helpful tips for when your LO does transition to a toddler bed around the age of 3. Hi! I am so glad to hear that your LO is sleeping so well at night. This is wonderful. Nap training is notorious for taking a little longer than nights because there is naturally less drive to sleep during the day. However, your LO can definitely learn how to fall asleep independently during the daytime too, just like at night! I would recommend our naps course. I’m sleep training my baby. He’s just shy of 6 months and we’ve been off and on with our consistency, because he caught a cold and I felt I needed to tend to him more and that messed up the process. Hello, due to cat napping and my own personal schedule I had my baby on a six to six schedule since 5 months. Naps have recently started to lengthen to an hour. She is 7 months today and I’m always just guessing if I should drop the nap or wait since there is no protest. Shall I wait a bit since her naps just started extending? Should I extend windows regardless? She gets 2hours to 2 1/2 hours a day maximum. She wakes up in the morning at 5:30/6. Thank you for your time 🤍

Hi! Congrats on your newest addition. You don't sound anxious at all! You sound just like a Mama wanting to ensure her LO gets the rest her body needs. You are doing a great job. An early bedtime can work really well for a lot of kiddos! You can also move it later too as she gets older, so I promise, she is not "ruined" whatsoever! The majority of babies move to 2 naps between 8-9 months, so if your LO isn't protesting, I would keep your nap the same. We also have an amazing program called 21 Days to Peace and Quiet which helps give you all of the guidelines and recommendations for your child now, and each month as she ages. You can also join our support community too which gives you a jam-packed FAQ video library and 8 Zoom calls to join! • @Babysleepmadesimple
      @Babysleepmadesimple 2 місяці тому

Hello Krystle, I am sorry if there was any confusion with the video. Our video does state that during a regression, LO's may need some extra comfort here and there. However, you can still provide comfort to your LO without deviating greatly from LO's sleep routine. The closer you stick to the routine, the better your LO will sleep and and get the rest his/her body needs. We always want parents to trust their parental intuition with when extra comfort is needed. However, there are times when parents can provide too much physical support for a LO and it actually is too stimulating and prevents them from falling asleep. We discuss all of this in our Big Kid course and love supporting our families! Best, Alyssa, BSMS Client Support Manager
